Hot-footing down to London from Birmingham one year ago with a fabulous array of neon guitars and synths, Trash Fashion's rich, smooth, tobaccoey blend of Rock, Punk, Metal, Electro, Rave and Disco has been feeding London's Freaks and Vipers ever since! Situationist Black Country punk rock with a nod to The Birthday Party and The Cramps

Da' Fringe comprise: Larry Clitter, Dusty Enclaves, Nazi Sinatra, Anal Ravine and 'Tiny' Gene Pool.

Mark E. Smith is a huge fan of the band and they've supported The Fall on two UK tours, as well as playing with The Damned and John Cooper Clark

Their mission statement reads:

It's nearly fifty years, Bubba. Half a century of Rock n Roll has brought us to where we are now. Fifty years of invention/reinvention/remake/remodel/ bastardise /plagiarise/quick bucks and failed vision. What’s left? Where to go? Is anyone really convinced that the ‘new thing’ is truly the ‘new thing’, or just the previous generation’s ‘nearly new thing’ repackaged for today’s young bloods?

Elvis was NEW. The Velvet Underground were NEW. Kraftwerk were NEW. Has there really been any need for anything else? All music should be a reaction; to the political climate, personal climate and musical climate. All music should strive to be original, innovative and new.

But it’s nearly fifty years, Bubba…. What can possibly be done that hasn’t been done before? The Pubic Fringe understand this dilemma. It is the reason they formed. This paradox is the essence of P-Fringe Collectivism. Seize your moment and stamp your own vision on the prevailing culture, thus giving people what they think they want…. But on YOUR TERMS. That’s why the Pubic Fringe chose to be a covers band. Karaoke culture’s the norm. An all-encompassing parasite that drains the creative life-blood out of live music, shits megabucks and shows no sign of abating. But, ‘Hey!’ It’s what the people want – they demand it, so the promoters supply it… or is it the other way round?

Either way, people enjoy covers bands cos they know what they’re gonna get. It’s an opportunity to get close and sweaty, and sing along to bands who, in their ‘proper’ incarnation, have managed to undo all Punks hard slog by retreating to the untouchable, anodyne pomp and swagger of the 70s stadium rock cash-cow. The Pubic Fringe, however, are not interested in taking the easy option and slavishly recreating a shared consensus of some one else’s life, work and effort. The Pubic Fringe are NOT a tribute band. The Pubic Fringe prefer the creative interpretation of songs that ignite fires in their collective bellies. The Pubic Fringe revel in introducing their audience to obscure and lesser-known treasures, hitherto denied the luxury of mass acceptance.

This band is not interested in a quick-win regurgitation of totems enshrined in the national psyche.

That is PROSTITUTION.

The Pubic Fringe are not prostitutes.

They may grease glans’ and bleach gussets with Rod Stewart and Dr. Hook, but for the majority, the songs of Steve Alaimo and Kip Tyler are as familiar and enticing as being cupped by an old man’s hand. No shit, Bubba. There’s nothing commercial about THIS sex industry. This is a simple case of consenting adults engaging in private acts in public places. Everyone is a voyeur.

It was a rainy Tuesday night - but for those of you that made it - thanks very much!

Graham Parsnip had the crowd crying with laughter at tracks like Tractor Love and Psycho Dave, and it's not often you see a man onstage wearing just a Phil Collins T-Shirt and a pair of green y-fronts. They more than lived up to their billing as "The thinking mans Chas and Dave"

When Bears Attack put everything into their set of trombone-fuelled punk, when they finished the stage contained more sweat than in a Swedish Sauna.

And 51 Breaks capped things off nicely with a polished performance that belied their young age.

Hooker have sadly had to drop out of our show on October 11th, but thankfully 51 Breaks have stepped into the breach, so the lineup now features them along with When Bears Attack and The Graham Parsnip Liquidiser Torture Think-tank (Project) opening proceedings - so get there early!

In other news - we're now booking bands for our two nights at the University of Birmingham in conjunction with their indiesoc on October 25th and November 22nd (both Tuesday nights) details and bands will be confirmed soon, but as far as we're aware, non-students will have no problem in getting in to these gigs.

Also Old School Tie will be first on the bill for out November 7th show.

Quartet from the Black Country, following in the fine lineage of bands from Stourbridge like PWEI, the Wonderstuff and Ned's Atomic Dustbins! They've got a bit local fanbase and played to a staggering 10,000 people at the Festival of Water and Light. They've been compared to Muse but do have their own distinctive sound and some fantastic tracks with soaring epic choruses.

People we didn't book #1 - Karl Kennedy

We tried to book Karl Kennedy aka Alan Fletcher and his band The Waiting Room to play at ADKoF.

We used such flattery as:

"I'd just like to say I'm a big fan of your work, both on
Neighbours and in Waiting Room. I love the new album, my favourite
track is Mattress On The Floor - being a student myself, it really
struck a chord, however we don't get the cockroaches over here!"

His reply:

We are going to be in Birmingham in November but I believe it will be
at the Walkabout. The tour is almost completely finalised and I will
send detalils when it is.

The Autumn/Winter Collection...the return...

The provisional dates for 2005's DJing only events at Selly Oak's Bristol Pear are as follows:

September 27th
October 25th
November 22nd

Entry is £1 and the nights run from 19:30-23:00. Ideal for those nights when you can only be half-arsed to go out, or even if you just fancy a night at the pub to a soundtrack other than an extortionate jukebox. For those of you who have not yet had the pleasure of treading the Pear's hallowed boards, it is a jolly nice pub and reasonably priced [more so for students as it is a Scream pub]. I'll let you know when these dates become official-official, but it's always nice to have warning eh? If anyone has any advance requests for the nights, pop them in the comments section and we'll fight over who gets to play them... ;)

Clare and I were moseying through central Birmingham this afternoon after a pleasing meeting with the people who run the Medicine Bar, and we got to discussing our branding...the KoF logo, flyer layout etc...and we thought that a theme of bathroom tiles, shower curtains etc. would be most excellent! Tiles for the poster/flyer backdrop, and maybe a shower curtain around the DJ booth - what does everyone think? I'd have some kind of fun with that decor! :D

Bath Moles 25/07/05

A Different Kettle of Fish made its first steps outside of the realms of Birmingham last week with a one-off event [although future endeavours are by no means out of the question] at the legendary Moles Club. An indie paradise that lurks beneath the streets of Bath, Moles has hosted gigs from subsequently renowned bands for years now, and they have a rather exciting Hall of Fame upstairs as testament to that [I'm particularly fond of seeing the pictures of Elastica and Kenickie]. So yes, under the name 'Kettle of Fish'...presumably due to the fact that the full name wouldn't fit on one row of a flyer, we brought the magic of Mobrown to the locals along with a local emo band, Zilch. The latter were, I confess, surprisingly ace...I am not generally very fond of emo...with the possible exception of Jimmy Eat World, but Zilch have a lot of potential for such a young band and were just great fun all round. Picky from Mobrown was heard to quip that putting him on after such an exceptional drumming talent in particular was tantamount to cruelty...so yes, if you like your emo rock, keep your eyes and ears peeled for Zilch, who we may try and have up here in Brum in future.

After a brief set from myself and the newly formed DJ Alastor, we had an incendiary set from London's Mobrown, who I have been itching to see live for ages! They didn't disappoint, although I wish we could have brought them a bigger crowd than we managed - however, the Moles manager was impressed with the turnout considering that it was out of term time, and so we may give it another go in the new year. The staff at Moles were nothing but helpful and did us some lovely flyers and posters...even if a crossing of wires did mean that Zilch were promoted as Ruth Theodore...
